The City of Akron is gearing up to offer local teens a new hangout spot for the summer. "Connect at the Rec" is a program set to kick off on June 27, providing teenagers in grades 6-12 with an array of recreational activities over the course of five Friday nights. Between 5:00 pm and 9:00 pm, they can head to either the Ed Davis Community Center or the Joy Park Community Center, both equipped with facilities for open gym, arts and crafts, and a variety of exciting attractions including a live DJ and mobile gaming trucks, according to the City of Akron announcement.
Designed to create a safe and engaging environment for its youth, the program doesn't stop at entertainment alone. With free meals and hair care services on offer, the initiative seems to be about nourishing both the body and the community spirit. Registration for the program, which is compulsory, remains open until 6:00 pm on the day of the events, but only for up to 200 students at Ed Davis and 150 at Joy Park, keeping these recreation centers' doors open for those who arrive punctually.
An integrated effort by several city entities, including the Mayor’s Office and departments like Akron Recreation and Parks, Police, and Fire, the program aims to construct a bridge between young Akronites and the local authorities. Mayor Shammas Malik emphasizes the value of such connections during the balmy months, with a statement obtained by the City of Akron press release, "By providing our kids with somewhere to go to connect with their peers, enjoy their hobbies, and interact with community leaders, it keeps them engaged, safe, and having fun which is the goal for summertime!"
Local businesses and groups like the Akron Urban League and Beyond Expectations Barber College are getting in on the act too, helping to sponsor and support the initiative. Funding for "Connect at the Rec" includes a charitable $3,000 donation from Ron Marhofer, and one would hope that more local enterprises follow the lead. When it comes to the particulars, each night is going to start with a keynote speaker and a run-through of what's expected of its attendees, ensuring that everyone's on the same fun-filled yet orderly page.
