The Apache Junction Police Department is mourning the loss of Officer Gabriel Facio, who succumbed to injuries sustained in a shooting on June 2. As reported by FOX 10 Phoenix, Chief Michael Pooley expressed profound sorrow, saying "It is with a broken heart I inform you of the passing of Officer Gabriel Facio today at noon. On behalf of the men and women of the Apache Junction Police Department, we appreciate the support and outpouring of love from the community. A little piece of us was lost as Officer Facio took his last breath surrounded by family and friends." Facio, was remembered as a devoted public servant and family man during an hours-after-death procession from Apache Junction to the Maricopa County Medical Examiner's Office in downtown Phoenix, with community and law enforcement paying respects.
Details emerged of the tragic incident that took the officer's life, involving a confrontation with an non-compliant road rage suspect, later identified as 37-year-old Roger Nunez. Apache Junction Police had used "less lethal" ammunition to gain compliance, but the situation escalated when Nunez fired at the officers, according to the Apache Junction Police Department statement on FOX 10 Phoenix. Facio had been with the department for nearly four years and his death is marked as the first officer fatality in the Valley in 2025.
Pinal County Attorney Brad Miller addressed the shooting's impact on the community, as cited by ABC15. "This senseless act has shaken us to our core," Miller stated, emphasizing the office's commitment to seeking justice. Meanwhile, Acting Phoenix Police Chief, Dennis Orender, offered condolences, reflecting on Facio's early career with the Phoenix Police Department. Orender noted that Facio will always be part of their extended family, recognizing the grief shared among officers who had served with him.
The community is rallying in support of Officer Facio's family, with an upcoming BBQ fundraising event at Apache Junction High School scheduled for Wednesday, June 11.
