To address the visible increase in homelessness, the Apopka City Council has given the green light to Matthew's Hope to deploy a mobile shelter bus within the city. As a temporary solution to aid those without a roof over their heads, the initiative will utilize a motorcoach to provide essential services, including food, showers, and a place to sleep.

The council's unanimous decision, forged on Wednesday, grants the nonprofit use of city property for parking the bus. ClickOrlando reports that a lot behind the City's Fuel Island, located at 320 E 8th Street, was identified as the most spacious and therefore the preferred location among four potential options. The move, however, is not meant to be a cure-all. "We need to all understand, this is not going to solve the homeless issue," Scott Billue, the founder of Matthew's Hope, stated. Instead, he described it as "a bridge" towards a more sustainable solution.

Following the approval, the organization is expected to provide a monthly schedule indicating where the bus will be parked each evening. This requirement helps streamline the coordination with local authorities. In terms of logistics, Apopka is not covering the costs of the buses or their operational expenses. Nevertheless, there's ongoing discussion about reducing expenses by having electricity hookups available for the buses to operate without burning fuel while parked.

The agreement, also detailed by The Apopka Voice, allows for Matthew's Hope to use the designated locations and potentially additional sites provided through partnerships with local organizations. The one-year license can be renewed or extended, ensuring that the mobile outreach program can become a lasting aspect of the community's support network for the homeless. The terms also involve security measures; contracted personnel will be equipped with non-lethal weapons to maintain safety on the buses.
