
In a case that shows tech-savvy individuals can sometimes outsmart the criminal element with their own devices, the Alhambra Police Department made two arrests following a vehicle theft that was foiled by an Apple AirTag. The victim reported her car stolen after parking and locking it earlier in the day, only to find it missing upon her return. However, the presence of an Apple AirTag allowed the vehicle's movements to be tracked, leading officers to an alley in Los Angeles.
Upon arrival at the tracked location, police discovered the stolen vehicle and detained two individuals. According to the Alhambra Police Department's Facebook post, one suspect was found in possession of two sets of car keys, methamphetamine, Adderall for which he did not have a prescription, and pepper spray. The other suspect was found with a meth pipe and was already wanted on an existing warrant.
Mario Huitron and Honorio De La Torre, both from Los Angeles, were subsequently arrested and booked at the APD Jail as a result of the incident. It was noted that the battery had been removed from the vehicle during the time it was stolen, suggesting potential intentions beyond a simple joyride.
The police department's social media update concluded with a terse lesson for potential thieves, stating, "If it's not yours, think twice before stealing, and don't touch it." This case serves as a reminder that modern technology, like the use of an Apple AirTag, can sometimes provide to be a crucial tool in not only recovering stolen property but also in aiding to apprehend those involved in the act of theft.
