Atlanta marked Juneteenth with multiple community events honoring Black history and culture. According to FOX 5 Atlanta, the Atlanta History Center hosted its annual celebration, which included artisan demonstrations, panel discussions about the holiday’s historical importance, and an art fair featuring handmade goods and food from Black-owned businesses.
Meanwhile, the 13th annual Juneteenth Atlanta Parade and Music Festival, covered by Atlanta News First, brought crowds to the Old Fourth Ward for a parade beginning near the King Center and ending at Piedmont Park. The event included live music, food vendors, dancers, drummers, sports cars, and horseback riders.
The festival also featured a memorial for gun violence victims, and protestors from the “No King’s Day” movement joined the parade to raise awareness of ongoing civil rights issues, as per the Atlanta News First.
Juneteenth, which commemorates June 19, 1865—the date when enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, learned of their freedom—became a federal holiday in 2021. Atlanta’s events aimed to recognize this historic moment while continuing to highlight current challenges.
