Atlanta officials have announced a citywide Summer Safety Plan aimed at reducing crime and promoting public safety during the busy summer months. Mayor Andre Dickens and the Atlanta Police Department introduced the initiative from the new Public Safety Training Center.

According to FOX 5 Atlanta, the plan includes 24/7 policing efforts and a range of community-based programs. A key focus is providing employment and activity opportunities for youth in an effort to reduce youth-related crime. “I said then when we brought down youth crime, crime overall would come down and it has. A big part of this is just about giving our young people something to do, giving them guidance, mentorship, or even giving them a job,” Mayor Dickens said.

Police Chief Darin Schierbaum emphasized the department’s ongoing enforcement strategy. "Your police department, as I said, is not going to take a vacation summer. We’re going to tackle gun violence. We’re going to tackle auto thefts. And we are going to tackle street racing throughout the city. Don’t bring that here," he said in a statement reported by WSB-TV. So far this year, over 1,400 firearms have been removed from city streets, with particular attention on preventing youth access to guns.

City officials are also encouraging public involvement through camera registration and community reporting. Residents are asked to contact Crime Stoppers with information about criminal activity. Deputy Chief Charles Hampton highlighted upcoming city events and encouraged public participation. “We enjoy hosting big events and we look forward to visitors, residence to come down to Atlanta to participate in the wonderful plans that we have,” he told FOX 5 Atlanta.

The safety plan will remain in effect throughout the summer, with continued efforts to support both law enforcement operations and community engagement.
