After an extensive investigation that spanned over a year, authorities in Cuyahoga County have successfully identified a decedent whose remains were found in Brooklyn, Ohio, back in November 2023. The collaborative effort between the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner's Office (CCMEO) and the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) came to fruition with the positive identification of 27-year-old Nathaniel Dabrowski, originally from Brooklyn, Ohio.
In a news release, Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner Dr. Thomas P. Gilson expressed satisfaction in confirming Dabrowski’s identity, which "provides closure to families." Dr. Gilson commended the persistent efforts of both teams from CCMEO and BCI. "We never stop trying to reunite our unknown decedents with their families," Gilson said in a statement obtained by Cuyahoga County News, offering condolences to the Dabrowski family. This recognition marks an end to a prolonged period of uncertainty that often accompanies such cases.
The journey to identification was meticulous, involving exhaustive research into missing persons reports and outreach to institutions including hotels, schools, and community centers. Despite a DNA profile being entered into the CODIS database that resulted in no hits, persistence paid off. On April 24, 2025, a breakthrough came when a relative came forward, prompting further investigation. The following day, positive identification was confirmed through x-ray comparisons, formally closing the case on identifying the deceased as Nathaniel Dabrowski.
While the investigation into the circumstances surrounding Dabrowski's death continues, Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost highlighted the determined efforts of the investigators. "An identity restored cannot bring a loved one back, but it can provide a measure of closure amid the search for answers," Yost said in a statement obtained by Cuyahoga County News. His words embody the sentiment of resolution that accompanies the arduous task of identification, especially in cases long drawn out over months and years.
