Boston City Councilor Tania Fernandes Anderson has officially resigned from her District 7 seat following federal corruption charges. According to NBC Boston, she is accused of wire fraud and theft of public funds, including directing a $13,000 bonus to a relative on her staff, from which she kept $7,000.
Federal prosecutors have recommended a sentence of one year and one day in prison, along with $13,000 in restitution. In a statement on Instagram, Anderson announced her final day on the council will be July 4 and apologized to constituents.
Anderson was arrested at her Dorchester home by the FBI in December and initially pleaded not guilty in federal court. A federal grand jury later indicted her, revealing a scheme involving a relative and a cash exchange in a City Hall bathroom, as reported by WCVB. Despite the charges, she continued serving for a time to address district budget matters. Ahead of her departure, she released a "District 7 Constituent Toolkit" to assist residents during the transition. Her formal sentencing is set for July 29 and may include prison time, supervised release, and restitution.
