In recognition of National PRIDE Month and the upcoming PRIDE Parade in Boston, the Boston Police Department (BPD) has launched its new Safe Space Program. This initiative, in partnership with local businesses and institutions, designates specific locations where individuals in crisis or facing harassment can seek help.

According to the Boston Police Department, these Safe Spaces—such as storefronts and cafes—are marked with an official BPD window decal and are staffed by individuals trained to contact emergency responders when needed. Staff are not expected to place themselves in danger.

Starbucks is the first partner in the program, with 35 locations across Boston participating. BPD Commissioner Michael Cox stated that the program aligns with the department’s community policing mission and encouraged other businesses to join.

The program is intended to support people who may face threats or discrimination based on factors such as race, gender identity, or sexual orientation. It also aims to strengthen relationships between the police and the community.

Businesses interested in joining the program can contact the BPD Bureau of Community Engagement. Media inquiries can be directed to BPD Media Relations. The Safe Space Program will be active during PRIDE Month and beyond.
