Just weeks after being acquitted of murder and manslaughter charges, Karen Read is taking her controversial case from the courtroom to the screen. Read, alongside her lead attorney, Alan Jackson, has teamed up with LBI Productions to develop a scripted adaptation that delves into the high-profile legal battle. The partnership, as The Boston Globe reports, will feature previously undisclosed case details.

Following her dramatic acquittal on June 18, Read, who also received a conviction for drunk driving with a sentence of probation, is promising an inside look at the case that includes "layers that have never been brought to light," as stated by LBI production head Julie Yorn. While less than two weeks have passed since the verdict, Yorn told The Boston Globe, "This isn't just a legal thriller. It's about what happens when a single voice refuses to be silenced."

The case itself centers around the death of Read's boyfriend, Boston Police Officer John O’Keefe, in January 2022. Acquitted of running over O'Keefe with her SUV, Read's defense argued an alternative narrative in which he was attacked and fatally injured at an afterparty. With the storyline touching on allegations of law enforcement coverup, Read was quoted in The Hollywood Reporter saying, "I struggled for over three years to overcome this power and corruption, eliciting help from tens of private investigators, multiple attorneys, and eventually — the federal government."

The upcoming project with LBI Productions aims to explore this intricate web of defense and counter-investigation, giving rise to a cultural debate that captured national headlines. The lens through which the narrative unfolds promises an exclusive look at the perspectives of both Read and Jackson. With whispers of urgency, nuance, and care in telling this story, Yorn added in another statement obtained by The Hollywood Reporter, "Karen’s case reflects the complicated moment in time in which we live—we will have an opportunity to show layers that have never been brought to light."

As the screen adaptation enters development, interest in the Karen Read story continues to soar. Prior to the announcement of the LBI deal, Investigation Discovery, Netflix, and others had already produced docuseries on the case.
