A Brockton man has been sentenced to a combined total of 30 to 40 years in state prison for the 2020 shooting of his pregnant girlfriend that resulted in her permanent blindness. The incident, which unfolded while their three young children were present, has culminated with Shaun Holiday, age 30, facing a long term behind bars after a Plymouth County jury found him guilty of a slew of charges including assault to murder and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.
Details from the Enterprise News report that Holiday will first serve a sentence of 25 to 30 years, followed by an additional five to 10 years for a related charge. The court also mandated a five-year probation period post-release, specifying terms like a GPS monitor and completing an intimate partner abuse program. Holiday, who injured himself during the incident, was said to have suffered an accidental, self-inflicted gunshot wound to his left forearm.
The violent episode took place in a North Main Street apartment in Brockton, thrusting a pregnant woman and her unborn child into a fight for their lives. Now Boston Medical Center South, where the victim was initially taken, managed her injuries before she was transferred to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, as detailed in the statement from the DA's office. Despite life-saving efforts, the shooting left the mother-to-be without sight.
According to the information obtained from the Boston Globe, the assault unfolded when Holiday "gained access" to the apartment and, in a brutal assault, "grabbed the victim from behind, and wrapped his left arm around her neck before pressing a .40 caliber gun to her right temple and firing." This act has now resulted in a lengthy prison term designed, in part, to protect society and to serve as punishment for the array of charges leveled against Holiday, including home invasion and three counts of reckless endangerment.
