A Bronx mother has received a 17-year prison sentence after her guilty plea to first-degree manslaughter charges for the beating death of her 7-year-old daughter, Julissia Batties. The sentencing, announced by Bronx District Attorney Darcel D. Clark, comes after an unsettling account of child abuse that culminated in the young girl's tragic demise. According to a press release from the Bronx District Attorney's Office, Navasia Jones, 39, was sentenced by Bronx Supreme Court Justice Joseph McCormack, who imposed a two-year increase to the initial 15-year sentence following Jones' reluctance to attend court and her minimizing of the guilt.
The incident took place between August 8 and August 10, 2021, at the family's Alexander Avenue home in the Bronx. After inflicting a brutal beating that lasted over two days, Jones called 911 on the morning of August 10. First responders found young Julissia without vital signs; she was later pronounced dead at NYC Health + Hospitals Lincoln, suffering from injuries that led to internal bleeding. "No child should be exposed to such torment or suffer the unimaginable terror Julissia faced at such a young age," District Attorney Clark stated, highlighting the disturbing nature of the crime, as per the Bronx District Attorney's Office.
The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner reported that the force of the assault on Julissia was significant enough to cause her internal organs to tear, resulting in her abdomen filling with blood. Additional findings revealed multiple signs of trauma, including bruises across her face and body, and evidence consistent with sexual assault. The prosecution was led by Assistant District Attorney Alexandra Militano, Deputy Chief of the Child Abuse/Sex Crimes Bureau, and Assistant District Attorney Camila Sosa, under several higher ranks' supervision.
District Attorney Clark also acknowledged the NYPD's role in the investigation, especially the efforts of Detective Jeffrey Grater, formerly of the 40th Precinct Squad, the 40th Precinct Detective Squad, and Bronx Homicide. Their work on the case was integral to bringing the matter to a close.
