A 31-year-old man was robbed of $760 in cash and a credit card by two men inside the Fordham Road subway station mezzanine early Wednesday, September 9, according to police. The theft happened around 2:45 a.m., and the suspects fled on foot with the stolen property. Police are still searching for the pair.
The robbery, covered by News 12 Bronx, is the latest in a run of violent incidents at the busy IND Concourse Line hub. It comes two days after a 46-year-old man was stabbed multiple times in the chest, neck and hand aboard a D train at the same station, an attack Hoodline covered in its coverage of the September 8 stabbing, with the victim treated at St. Barnabas Hospital.
Under New York Penal Law § 160.10, a robbery committed by two or more people aiding each other can be charged as Robbery in the Second Degree, a Class C violent felony carrying a potential sentence of 3.5 to 15 years in state prison, according to the Law Offices of Jeffrey Lichtman. Police were still looking for the suspects.
A Station With a Troubled Recent History
The mezzanine where Wednesday's robbery unfolded has become a flashpoint for violence in recent months. And on March 5, a suspect struck a uniformed NYPD officer in the head on the same mezzanine before fleeing to street level, according to the Norwood News; that officer was also treated at St. Barnabas Hospital.
The pattern of overnight robberies at Fordham Road is not new. On April 12, 2025, three suspects carried out an early-morning armed robbery inside the same station at approximately 2:40 a.m., per the Norwood News — a timestamp that closely mirrors this week's 2:45 a.m. incident. Separately, on June 27, an assailant pushed a 47-year-old man into an arriving D train on the platform, causing facial injuries, as reported by News 12 Brooklyn.
Why the Mezzanine Is So Exposed
Part of the challenge lies in the station's layout. The Fordham Road stop features an unusually long subterranean mezzanine, built with multiple staircases and wide concourses during the 1930s expansion of the Independent Subway System, according to background compiled on Reddit's r/nycrail community. NYPD CompStat statistics through September 6 show transit crime complaints in the 46th Precinct, which covers the Fordham Road corridor, reached 26 year-to-date — a 30 percent jump from the 20 transit crimes reported over the same period in 2025, according to figures posted on NYC.gov. The rise in complaints tracks closely with the string of violent incidents reported at the station in recent months.
Police are asking anyone with information about Wednesday's robbery to call the NYPD Crime Stoppers hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477). The Crime Stoppers hotline is available for tips, according to the New York City Police Foundation. Police were still looking for the suspects.
