A 46-year-old man was stabbed multiple times aboard a D train at the Fordham Road subway station Monday evening, suffering wounds to his chest, neck and hand before being rushed to a nearby hospital. Police say the attack happened just after 6:40 p.m., and no arrests have been made.
Officers found the man with stab wounds after responding to the Fordham Road station, according to News 12 Bronx. He was transported to St. Barnabas Hospital, and police reported that he is expected to recover from his injuries. The outlet's report, credited to journalist Sheyla Torres, does not indicate that any suspect has been identified or apprehended in connection with the stabbing.
A Familiar and Troubling Location
This is not the first time the Fordham Road station has made headlines for blade violence. Less than three months earlier, on June 17, a 24-year-old rider was slashed across the face in an unsolved attack on the station's mezzanine, and that victim was also treated at St. Barnabas Hospital, as Hoodline reported at the time.
The pattern stretches back further. In June 2026, a 47-year-old commuter was attacked while waiting for a southbound D train at the same station. In January 2022, a Good Samaritan was struck and killed by an incoming train. Two teenagers were arrested in connection with that death.
St. Barnabas Treats a Steady Stream of Trauma Cases
St. Barnabas Hospital, where Monday's victim was treated, is a 422-bed safety-net institution in the Belmont section of the Bronx that operates a designated Level II Trauma Center, according to the SBH Health System. Founded in 1866 as the Home for the Incurables, it is considered the oldest continuing health facility in New York State, giving West Bronx commuters injured in recurring Fordham-area violence access to a trauma center.
NYPD Transit District 11 is based in the Bronx, according to the Bronx Times.
Crime Stats Show a Mixed Picture
The stabbing lands amid a broader safety picture that is, statistically, improving in some respects. The NYPD reported zero murders, shootings or rapes in the system during the entire month, according to CBS News. Major crime in New York City fell 6.6% in August 2026.
But felony assault was the lone major crime category to buck that trend, increasing citywide in August, per the same CBS News report. Through the first eight months of 2026, the Bronx led the city in the decline in overall major crime, according to the City of New York. That contrast underscores why physical altercations involving knives continue to rattle commuters even as broader statistics trend downward.
