A 24-year-old man was slashed across the face Tuesday afternoon at the Fordham Road subway station in the Bronx, turning a routine commute into a crime scene. Police said the man was attacked on the station mezzanine near Fordham Road and Jerome Avenue just after 3:15 p.m. He suffered a laceration to his right cheek and was taken by paramedics to St. Barnabas Hospital, where he is expected to recover.
Police: Suspect May Have Boarded 4 Train
Detectives say the attacker ran off and may have boarded a 4 train right after the assault. Investigators are now combing through station surveillance video for leads, according to News 12 New York. As of the initial report, the NYPD had not released a description of the assailant, no arrests had been made, and police had not provided any possible motive.
Another Blade Attack in a Troubled Patch of the Bronx
This latest slashing lands on a growing list of knife incidents in and around the Fordham transit hub, including a late-night stabbing in mid-May that left one man dead; the Fordham midnight stabbing is among those recent cases. Neighborhood reporting indicates that residents and transit riders have been increasingly on edge about knife violence in the area.
How To Report Tips
Police are urging anyone with information about Tuesday’s attack, including cellphone video or other footage, to contact the NYPD. Crime Stoppers accepts anonymous tips by phone at 1-800-577-TIPS, as well as by text or online, according to the NYPD.
What Riders Can Expect
Transit riders in Fordham should expect a heavier police presence over the coming days as transit and local precincts look into a cluster of subway and street slashing incidents, officials and local reporting indicate. Investigators say witness video and station surveillance have been crucial in recent cases, and they are again asking commuters to preserve and share any recordings that might help, noting that earlier attacks led to stepped-up patrols.
NYPD Transit District detectives are handling the investigation. Anyone who witnessed the incident or has relevant footage is asked to call Crime Stoppers or contact their local precinct. This story will be updated if police release new information or announce an arrest.
