A crash last Friday night in the Bronx has left three pedestrians injured, one critically, after 28-year-old Charles Jenkins allegedly caused a multivehicle collision. The incident occurred around 9:45 p.m. at the intersection of Hunts Point Avenue and Bruckner Boulevard. Jenkins, driving eastbound on Hunts Point Avenue, is accused of running a red light and striking a Mercedes-Benz, which resulted in Jenkins' vehicle hitting three pedestrians on the sidewalk before colliding with a Chevy Equinox. According to CBS News, Jenkins attempted to flee the scene on foot but was later apprehended and taken into custody.
After reportedly running a steady red light, Jenkins' vehicle triggered a chain reaction that resulted in all three pedestrians being taken to a local hospital for treatment. Details provided by ABC 7 New York highlighted that a 33-year-old man was critically hurt, while the other two pedestrians, a 31-year-old woman and a 40-year-old man, are in stable condition. The drivers and passengers involved in the other vehicles were also taken to the hospital, with those in the Mercedes-Benz reported to be in stable condition.
Jenkins now faces a series of charges, including vehicular assault and aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle. Additional charges noted by police in the CBS News report include unlawful fleeing a police officer in a motor vehicle, reckless endangerment, failure to use headlights, and the initial red light violation that seemingly triggered the crash.
Authorities are continuing the investigation to establish the sequence of events leading up to the collision and to identify any contributing factors.
