The city of Bucyrus is gearing up to launch several community-centered projects, backed by a significant grant award announced by the Common Council. A total sum of $53,535 has been allocated to six innovative local initiatives aimed at fostering growth and sustainability within the Bucyrus area. This decision, part of the Bucyrus Civic Grants Program, was made in May 2025, and stands poised to support ventures from urban farming to cultural enrichment.
Among the recipients is Human Concerns, which has been granted $6,985 to be put towards employing a professional grant writer. This move is seen as a strategic effort to enhance the organization's capability to secure additional funding. Meanwhile, the Friends of the South Milwaukee Library have been awarded $2,100 to acquire a video gaming system and relevant video games, aimed at creating a more inclusive space for young adults and children. While some may argue about the necessity of these technologies in a library setting, proponents highlight the potential to draw in a younger demographic and merge educational content with interactive technology.
An $8,000 slice of the grants cake is set to fortify Growing South Milwaukee’s efforts in building a storage shed, complete with rainwater collection and solar power for community gardens located at 1308 Milwaukee Avenue. This grant is expected to, not only bolster food security but to also educate the community on sustainable agricultural practices. Further down the road, the South Milwaukee Historical Society is slated to receive $6,950 to upgrade its archival capabilities with new printing and scanning equipment, as well as acid-free storage solutions for preserving local history.
The biggest chunk of grant funding, amounting to $25,000, has been earmarked for MARM Farm. In accordance with details published on the City of South Milwaukee's website, this project aims to "convert a 40-foot shipping container into a self-contained urban growing unit (SCUGU) for sustainable hydroponic farming; also, for educational initiatives and food donations to Human Concerns." Finally, the South Milwaukee Celebrations Committee is set to effectively utilize a grant of $4,500 for marketing and event management services to launch a new jazz and gospel event.
