
Last Friday, a California inmate received his sentence for committing brutal first-degree murders within the confines of the state prison. Nicholas Mangelli had already been serving time when he took the lives of two individuals in separate incidents that took place in 2019 and 2022. As reported by the Sacramento County District Attorney's Office, the Honorable Laurel White ruled that Mangelli will face two consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole.
The chilling details of Mangelli's actions came to light during the trial. In the first incident on May 30, 2019, he assaulted a fellow inmate with a handmade weapon, stabbing him repeatedly in the head and torso. Despite immediate medical attention, the individual succumbed to his injuries within minutes of the attack. On July 23, 2022, another violent attack occurred when Mangelli inflicted multiple stab wounds on a second victim using that were similarly fashioned by inmates. The victim was later pronounced dead after a desperate rush to the prison’s medical facility, according to the Sacramento County District Attorney's Office.
This conviction comes as justice for the unnamed victims and their families. The prosecutor in the case, Deputy District Attorney Colin Stephenson, successfully argued the gravity of Mangelli's crimes. After less than a month of deliberation, the jury found Mangelli guilty on April 29, for two counts of first-degree murder, convicting him additionally on charges of assault by a prisoner and custodial possession of a weapon. The specificity of Mangelli's previous crimes compounded the severity of his sentence, as stated by the Sacramento County District Attorney's Office.
