In a blend of advertising innovation and sugary sweet giveaways, a Carvel billboard in Manhattan's West Village is catching eyes and taste buds. Situated at 137 Perry St., the billboard ditches the norm by offering up free vanilla soft serve to anyone passing by. PIX11 reported that this unique promotion runs from noon to 7 p.m. today.
As temperatures climb, free ice cream sounds more like a community service than a promotion, appealing to locals worn down by the city's summer heat and steep living costs. New Yorkers are renowned for their love of bargains and, if you're part of Carvel’s loyalty program, known as Fudgie Fanatics, there's a cherry on top. Members can snag not only the ice cream but also rainbow sprinkles and branded merchandise like t-shirts and gift cards, as noted by PIX11. For those not yet signed up, registrations will be taken right at the billboard, allowing immediate access to the goodies.
The event also serves as a nod to Carvel's long-standing place in New York City's dessert scene. It was back in 1934 when founder Tom Carvel had the misfortunate luck, of his truck breaking down turning it into a serendipitous business opportunity to serve his soft serve, according to Time Out New York. That breakdown led to the creation of Carvel's original soft serve, a city staple ever since.
Time Out New York highlighted that if you're a dedicated Fudgie Fanatic, arriving early could pay off. The first 50 members in line are promised to receive the special treats. And should you miss this sweet event, there’s still a chance to celebrate with Carvel's nationwide tradition: BOGO free soft-serve sundaes every Wednesday, a sentiment echoed from Carvel's history of summer indulgence.
Reflecting on the spirit of the season, Chief Brand Officer Jim Salerno was quoted as saying, “For the past 91 years, enjoying Carvel’s ice cream treats with friends and family has been a special and memorable part of summer,” in a nostalgic reminder of the brand's long-held significance in fostering summer traditions. “This year is no different: We look forward to officially kicking off Ice Cream Season in a playful way because it’s not summer without Carvel,” Salerno told Time Out New York.
