In a move to forge a more inclusive bond with the LGBTQ+ community, the Chamblee Police Department has announced the initiation of its LGBT Liaison Program. Emphasizing the importance of safety and respect for all, Chief of Police Michael Dieppa has appointed Officer Brandon White as the department's first liaison to the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender population.
"We are committed to making sure every resident feels safe, respected, and heard," Dieppa said, in a statement obtained by WSB Radio. The new role for Officer White is more than symbolic, it's a direct line to those in need of support, be it resources or assistance, within the LGBT community.
Officer White is no stranger to adversity, being at the center of a vicious hate crime in 2012 that left a permanent mark not just on him, but also on the community. A video capturing the attack quickly went viral, sparking widespread condemnation, as reported by FOX 5 Atlanta. His appointment not only serves as a testament to his resilience, but also stands as a beacon of progress in law enforcement's approach to diversity and inclusion.
The program is not only about bridging divides but also enhancing understanding. "The training is not just for law enforcement, it’s also for civilians," White shared with FOX 5 Atlanta. The goal, according to White, is not just to initiate communication but to grow a network of partnerships that can nurture and expand the program comprehensively, ensuring that inclusivity is not just a policy but a practice.
Back in April, Officer White took part in a three-day LGBT Law Enforcement Liaison Academy, bolstering his credentials and preparing him to spearhead this groundbreaking program. As Chamblee's police department strives for a stronger, more harmonious rapport with all segments of its constituency, the LGBT Liaison Program represents a commitment to recognizably genuine strides toward equality and compassion for all.
