In an effort to support renewable energy, Charlotte and Mecklenburg County have stepped up with a program designed to make solar power a more attainable option for local residents. According to a recent announcement, the Solarize Charlotte-Mecklenburg campaign is launching next Wednesday, and targets boosting solar energy and battery installations across the region.

The initiative, which relies on a group-purchasing strategy, could potentially lower costs for those investing in solar systems. As the number of participants increases, the savings for each buyer also grows, which mirrors the model of bulk buying. Residents interested in the program have already begun signing up, with nearly 40 individuals registering to learn more about the campaign. However, in a quote obtained by the City of Charlotte's news release, "We encourage everyone to tell their friends and neighbors about the environmental benefits of bringing solar to your community. The more people who participate, the lower the cost will be," expressed Erin Stanforth, sustainability and resiliency manager for Mecklenburg County.

The public debut of the Solarize Charlotte-Mecklenburg program will take place at the Innovation Barn on 932 Seigle Ave. from 6-7:30 p.m. Attendees will have the chance to learn from community leaders, meet the selected local installer company, and understand the benefits of solar energy and battery storage. Moreover, every homeowner and business owner attending will have the opportunity to sign up for a free, non-compulsory property assessment.

The Solarize Charlotte-Mecklenburg campaign is the culmination of a local partnership that includes the City of Charlotte, Mecklenburg County, Town of Davidson, and Centralina Regional Council. Free enrollment is available until October 31, and deadlines for residential contracts are set for December 31. The commercial contract, deadline is March 31, 2026, with installations projected to continue until at least April 15, 2026. Overall, this initiative underlines a significant move toward a greener and more sustainable energy policy within the local community.
