The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department has made public body-worn camera footage of a fatal crash that took place more than three years ago along Statesville Road. This release follows a court order and unfolds the tragic events of January 3, 2022, which led to the death of 28-year-old Brittany Webb, as reported by Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's newsroom.
The pursuit began when CMPD officers attempted to stop a black Jeep Grand Cherokee on Interstate 85 for having a tinted license plate cover. Despite repeated attempts by the officers to pull over the vehicle using blue lights and sirens, the driver, identified as Bryan Gabriel Franklin Jr., did not comply. The subsequent chase led down a series of local roads culminating in a dead-end where Franklin momentarily halted before fleeing again, according to official reports.
The Real Time Crime Center, monitoring traffic, tracked Franklin as he turned onto incoming traffic on Statesville Road. Moments later, a head-on collision was reported as his Jeep clashed with Webb’s Honda Accord. The patrol officers who were following from a distance responded to the scene upon hearing the radio traffic, arriving at the crash site within a minute of the reported collision.
All individuals involved in the crash were transported to a hospital, where Webb succumbed to her injuries three weeks later. Franklin was later arrested and convicted, now serving a 13-year sentence for Attempted Murder and Assault with a Deadly Weapon Inflicting Serious Injury. CMPD's investigations confirmed that its officers followed protocol in the incident. The public can now access the Critical Incident Briefing video and the BWC footage through the CMPD’s website, shedding light on the harrowing incident that took away a life and changed another forever.
