A child was severely injured during a hands-on activity at the Jasmine Moran Children's Museum in Seminole, Oklahoma, resulting in an urgent medical evacuation to an Oklahoma City hospital. The incident, occurring around noon yesterday, involved an explosion at the museum's indoor s'mores-making station, which was part of its Hello Summer Celebration event. As reported by KOCO, the child, believed to be around 6 years old, suffered burn injuries.
Details of the cause of the explosion are currently under investigation. However, initial reports pointed to an open flame exhibit used for roasting marshmallows and hot dogs, which involved a bottle of hand sanitizer igniting due to its proximity to the fire. The News 9 indicated the severity of the burns. Seminole Fire Department confirmed the emergency response to the museum at the time of the incident.
In responses to the events, the museum's executive director confirmed that the s'mores maker was a recent addition, purchased specifically for the celebration event running from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. A statement released by the museum officials and obtained by KOCO included a commitment to investigating the incident thoroughly and stated, "The safety and well-being of every child and family who visits our museum is our highest priority. We are conducting a thorough review of the incident. We are committed to learning from this situation to continue providing a safe, fun and enriching environment for all children."
The museum's event was well-known in the community, attracting many to the space on Wrangler Boulevard for various festivities, including the infamous "s'mores" slot, scheduled from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. as seen on social media. Meanwhile, the Seminole Fire Chief Scott Childers provided information to News 4 saying, "the cause of the explosion is under investigation."
