Ohio's power grid has become a subject of serious concern among local officials in the wake of repeated outages that have reportedly left over 100,000 residents without electricity. On the front lines of these frustrations are the near-west side communities of Cuyahoga County, including Cleveland and Lakewood, where officials have directed their grievances toward FirstEnergy, the utility company responsible for providing consistent power.
After the latest power outage yesterday, Lakewood Mayor George, along with Councilman Brian Kazy and Councilman Charles Slife of Cleveland, penned a critical letter to the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO). The letter, published on Lakewood's official website, condemns FirstEnergy's performance and calls for a thorough investigation into the matter. "For the past year, FirstEnergy has fundamentally and repeatedly failed in that duty, with frequent and widespread power losses across the near west side communities," the letter states. It is a direct response to FirstEnergy's perceived corporate indifference as the area grapples with electricity instability not tied to weather or, as the letter puts it, "acts of God."
Particularly at stake, the officials claim, are the well-being of vulnerable citizens and the economic health of local businesses. The letter outlines the consequences of power losses, including seniors being trapped in high-rise buildings without air conditioning or elevators, businesses hemorrhaging revenue, and an increased strain on emergency services.
In the letter, a copy of which was obtained from Lakewood's official website, elected officials made it clear that past communication efforts with FirstEnergy have been met with "platitudes, excuses, dodging, empty promises, and general corporate apathy." Moreover, they highlighted a silence from the PUCO's board following an initial letter dated January 15th, which failed to elicit a response or any acknowledgment from the board. Local leaders have expressed that they feel their hands are being forced due to the lack of municipal power over FirstEnergy's operations, hence the appeal to PUCO's authority.
