A Cleveland police recruit, Cortez Smith, aged 28, tragically passed away on Saturday after a medical crisis ensued during a routine training exercise. The incident took place on Friday during the final physical agility test of the Academy Class #158, as reported by cleveland.com. After Smith's collapse, academy staff immediately rendered first aid, and he was transported to a local hospital.
According to the Cleveland Division of Police, his condition deteriorated rapidly upon arriving at the hospital, leading to him becoming unresponsive. In a statement obtained by FOX8, Cleveland Police Patrolmen’s Association President Andy Gasiewski expressed that "[a]n awful tragedy" had occurred, and the department's hearts were with Smith's family. Smith was pronounced dead the following day, and the family requested prayers as they commenced a journey they expected not of grief.
Tributes followed from city officials, with Cleveland Police Chief Dorothy Todd saying in a statement obtained by WKYC, “We are all deeply affected by this incident,” and urging support for Smith’s family and his fellow recruits. "I ask that you keep Recruit Smith and his family in your thoughts," added Todd. Cleveland Mayor Justin Bibb also offered his condolences, emphasizing that Smith's death was "a tragic loss" and an "unforgettable mark on our community" in a gesture that shows compassion towards those who serve and protect.
As the city comes to terms with Smith’s passing, his memory is being honored by the Cleveland Division of Police, his peers in the academy, and community members alike. While the exact cause of the medical emergency has not been reported, mourners come together for the Smith and Brown Family during this tough time,
