Cleveland State University (CSU) has ushered in a new era of leadership and vision in their computer science department, turning the page to welcome Dr. Stefan Andrei as the chair of their Computer Science Department and the executive director of the Center for Computing Education and Instruction (CCEI). Dr. Andrei arrives at CSU with a substantial resume that includes previous roles of professor and chair at the Oregon Institute of Technology and Lamar University, respectively.

Known for both his scholarly contributions and passion for academia, Andrei's cache of over 80 peer-reviewed conference papers, and more than 35 peer-reviewed journal articles, positions him as a seasoned intellectual force. His research—spanning verification, debugging, and optimization techniques for real-time embedded systems, along with software engineering and translation systems—has merited him a global reputation. Andrei, who also boasts editorial responsibilities as the editor-in-chief of the ACET Journal of Computer Education and Research, has demonstrated his commitment to advancing the field with 22 research grants tallying upwards of $3.5 million, according to CSU's announcement.

With his new roles, Andrei's influence will extend into shaping the future of computer science education within Ohio and beyond. "The University's Center for Computing Education and Instruction under Dr. Andrei’s leadership will continue its mission for improving access to high-quality computer science education for students of all ages within Northeast Ohio and beyond," according to the Cleveland State University, Dr. Debbie Jackson, the previous head of CCEI, conveyed with optimism about Andrei's appointment.

In addition to his work with CCEI, as the department chair within the Washkewicz College of Engineering, Andrei is set to offer considerable support across various academic programs. His expertise will be crucial in guiding research areas, procuring funding, and creating opportunities for CSU students. In a field that never stops evolving, the engagement in research, internships, and real-world projects promises to provide an invaluable edge for students under Andrei's stewardship. "His impressive background will help us to continue the momentum that our current faculty and staff have contributed to advocating for computer science education," shared Dr. Richard Schoephoerster, dean of the Washkewicz College of Engineering, according to Cleveland State University.

Dr. Andrei's arrival coincides with innovative advancements at CSU, including integrated degrees that span multiple disciplines, and a collaboration with the Cleveland Clinic to harness quantum computing and AI in medical contexts. These efforts underscore a commitment to remaining at the forefront of technological application and education, positioning CSU and, indeed, Cleveland as a beacon of computational innovation.
