The City of Houston is undergoing a leadership change in the Mayor’s Office, with Chief of Staff Chris Newport stepping down and Cynthia Wilson assuming the position. Newport, who played a significant role in establishing Mayor John Whitmire’s administration, is leaving the role to focus on family responsibilities but will continue to serve as a close advisor to the mayor, according to an announcement made earlier today. Wilson, who brings leadership experience including her previous role as District Superintendent for the Houston Independent School District, will take over as Chief of Staff effective immediately.
Newport’s tenure is recognized for contributing to the stabilization of the city’s budget and financial planning, improving operational efficiency by reducing redundancies and upgrading systems—efforts expected to have lasting benefits for Houston. He also played a role in advancing key initiatives, including the renewal of public service contracts and addressing suspended cases within the Houston Police Department. In a statement released by the City of Houston, Newport said, "It has been an absolute honor to serve Mayor Whitmire and the City of Houston," and he declared his ongoing belief in the mayor’s vision for Houston and commitment to respond to its calls of duty, irrespective of his official position.
Mayor Whitmire has acknowledged the sacrifice and dedication that Newport and his family have made to the city, specifically pointing out, "The long hours, late nights, and early mornings didn't go unnoticed, and we are truly appreciative," as was expressed in a city announcement. Whitmire assures that with the appointment of Wilson, the City of Houston will continue on its upward trajectory, leveraging her vast experience to navigate the challenges of municipal operations while pushing forward the mayor's priorities.
Wilson, who exited retirement to join the mayoral administration, has been a consistent presence in the mayor's office from the beginning of his term, and she takes on this new responsibility with a commitment to the mayor's objectives, "This is a pivotal moment in the mayor’s administration, and we will continue the momentum to fix Houston with robust policies that strengthen public safety, improve infrastructure, stabilize the city’s finances, and enhance quality-of-life issues," she stated according to the official release. With previous roles as Chief of Staff and Chief Human Capital Management Officer for the Dallas Independent School District, Wilson brings relevant experience to effectively address the varied needs of a complex and growing city.
