Dallas Animal Services (DAS) is making headlines with a remarkable uptick in pet adoptions for the year 2024, positioning itself as a statewide leader in Texas and achieving a national ranking of fourth. The statistics were reported by the Best Friends Animal Society in their annual National Dataset, encompassing nearly 4,000 shelters across the United States.
The data revealed that DAS successfully placed 12,261 pets in homes last year, which marks to significant increase in adoption rates by 41% from the previous year. This surge translates into 3,580 additional pets finding their forever homes compared to 2023, signaling a major achievement for the shelter and the larger Dallas community. These figures are indicative of DAS accounting for nearly 4% of the entire national increase in shelter adoptions, according to the City of Dallas.
Paul Ramon, the Director of Dallas Animal Services, expressed his team's pride in these accomplishments. "We're incredibly proud of what this team has accomplished," he stated, highlighting the thousands of lives saved and families completed. Ramon stressed the team's intention to "just getting started" and anticipates that with ongoing improvements to the adoption process and steadfast community support, the impact on pet lives saved will further escalate in 2025, per the City of Dallas.
When it comes to statewide comparisons, DAS outperformed its peers by a large margin, executing over 4,000 more adoptions than the next highest reporting shelter in El Paso. This feat is particularly noteworthy as it demonstrates Dallas citizens' willingness to actively participate in animal rescue by adopting through DAS or other local shelters. With the undying dedication of DAS staff and volunteers, alongside public engagement, the shelter is set to continue on this upward trajectory throughout the current year.
