While the Fourth of July fireworks bring a burst of joy for many, our canine companions often feel differently. Dallas Animal Services (DAS) is hosting 'Calming the Canines,' a volunteer event that offers solace to shelter dogs amid the barrage of celebratory clamor. On July 4 from 7:00 to 10:00 p.m., community members are welcome at the DAS facility on 1818 N. Westmoreland Road to comfort dogs frightened by the evening's noisy festivities.

Volunteers are encouraged to bring something comfortable to sit on, like a yoga mat or a folding chair, and spend time inside the shelter, but not inside the kennels. They may read, sing, or engage in quiet conversation, efforts designed to soothe the disturbed animals. "Fireworks may be fun for us, but they're terrifying for many of our pets," Assistant Director at DAS Victoria Chittam Bennett explained, per the City of Dallas. With limited parking available, carpooling is recommended for this community-building event.

This initiative, open to people of all ages, aims to mitigate the heightened stress many dogs experience during fireworks displays. A brief safety orientation will be provided to all attendees at the beginning of the event to ensure a smooth experience for both humans and dogs alike. Treats will be distributed by DAS to volunteers to pass along to the canines, though donations are always appreciated by the shelter.
