DeKalb County is providing a substantial financial break to homeowners struggling with property taxes. CEO Lorraine Cochran-Johnson has declared that over $206 million will be offered in tax relief for eligible property owners, with the move directly benefitting those who possess the homestead exemption. As FOX 5 Atlanta reports, the savings for a home valued at $450,000 could reach around $424, while homes worth $300,000 could see reductions of approximately $275.

The Equalized Homestead Option Sales Tax (EHOST), which operates through revenue gathered from a one-penny sales tax, is at the heart of this initiative. This tax mechanism is unique to Dekalb County and is entirely dedicated to reducing property tax burdens. To be eligible, homeowners must meet a specific set of criteria established by the county—criteria which includes factors such as primary residency and vehicle registration. According to a statement obtained by 11Alive, Cochran-Johnson noted, "All residents with a homestead exemption will receive the EHOST credit. Taxpayers have until July 14 to apply for a homestead exemption." The deadline for taxpayers to apply for a homestead exemption is July 14.

The application process for the homestead tax exemption, which is a measure aimed at providing tax relief for homeowners' primary residence, is accessible online. Homeowners interested in estimating their potential tax savings or applying for the exemption can view the necessary details through the county's official channels.

Funds from EHOST will not only alleviate the tax load carried by homeowners but are also set to cover aspects of countywide millage rates, operations, and even the local hospital. An estimated $193.5 million is earmarked for these expenses, with an additional $12.8 million allocated to other municipal or county millage rates. Reflecting on the initiative, "DeKalb County is the only county in the state with a one penny sales tax that’s dedicated 100 percent to property tax relief," Cochran-Johnson reiterated in a statement covered by FOX 5 Atlanta
