Delavan streets transformed into virtual ponds yesterday as the city was hit by an onslaught of heavy rains leading to flash flooding. In some areas, crews reported more than four inches of rainfall, as per WISN 12 News. Residents like Laura Hafner, who observed the rising water from her porch, noted that the water had reached the curbs earlier in the day. It seems an unprecedented sight for locals who witnessed how quickly their familiar streets could become temporary waterways.
The persistent downpour left drivers navigating through the unexpected urban lakes with difficulty. Tonnie Sutton, expressing his dismay to WISN 12 News, recounted the struggles of driving home from work under such treacherous conditions, stating, "When I was driving here, I actually was driving the speed limit, and even still, it made like a huge splash on the sides." Emergency crews have urged the community to avoid travel through the flooded roads, signaling the seriousness of the current conditions.
Several areas were particularly hard hit, with Phoenix Street and Borg Road mentioned in Gazette Extra as locations where emergency vehicles were present yesterday afternoon. Confirmation on road closures was difficult to acquire as Delavan's City Hall had shuttered for the day amidst the deluge. This left residents and local businesses to grapple with the waterlogged chaos largely uninformed and on their own.
What further complicated matters for Delavan's citizens was the spectacle of the flooding, which according to a TMJ4 report including statements from residents like Laura and Bill Haefner, saw water levels on residential streets reaching heights never before seen. "We've never seen anything like this, so this is the first time," Laura Haefner told TMJ4, underscoring the exceptional nature of yesterday's events.
