Democratic State Senator Jason Esteves has launched his campaign for Georgia governor and has received endorsements from 18 local Atlanta leaders. According to Atlanta News First, the endorsements come from a range of officials, including city councilmembers, state legislators from metro Atlanta, five members of the Atlanta school board, and a DeKalb County commissioner.

Esteves is campaigning to become Georgia’s first Black governor and the first Democrat to win the office in more than 20 years. He faces competition in the Democratic primary from former Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms and local pastor and businessman Olu Brown.

Esteves, a former educator and small business owner, has emphasized his background in public service. In a statement to FOX 5 Atlanta, he said, “I’m running for governor because I believe that Georgia deserves better, that we have a state that’s made progress but is leaving way too many folks behind.”

On the Republican side, Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr is currently the only declared candidate. Other possible Republican contenders include Lt. Gov. Burt Jones—who has been implicated, but not charged, in the election interference investigation—and Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger.
