El Paso residents are bracing themselves for a scorching week ahead, with the National Weather Service issuing a heat advisory that will remain in effect until midnight MDT tonight. The advisory, which covers Eastern/Central El Paso County, Salt Basin, and Western El Paso County, warns of temperatures soaring up to 107 degrees. The NWS alert highlights the potential for heat illnesses due to the extreme temperatures and advises the public to take necessary precautions.
The advisory emphasizes the importance of staying hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids, seeking shelter in air-conditioned rooms, avoiding direct sunlight, and keeping a watchful eye on relatives and neighbors. With the mercury climbing, outdoor activities should be scheduled for the early morning or late evening to prevent heat-related sickness. The NWS further suggests wearing lightweight and loose-fitting clothing to mitigate the effects of the heat. Despite the heat wave, Wednesday is expected to see a high near 101 degrees with sunny skies persisting throughout the week leading up to Juneteenth, which will also be sunny and hot with a high near 102, according to the National Weather Service.
As the weekend approaches, there is a slight chance, specifically a 20 percent chance, of showers and thunderstorms before midnight on Saturday, potentially offering a reprieve from the relentless heat. Following the potential showers, the weather outlook for Sunday and Monday includes a higher likelihood of thunderstorms, which could bring additional relief. Regardless, residents should remain cautious as the heat persists and monitor for any updates on conditions from the National Weather Service.
