Brian Rodiles, a former student of El Paso Community College (EPCC), has made headlines for successfully defending his master’s thesis in Computer Science at The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP). His research, focusing on cybersecurity for industrial control systems, utilizes network slicing and federated learning to enhance security in operational technology environments, according to EPCC News.

At EPCC, Rodiles earned an Associate of Science in Computer Science. Under the guidance of Dr. Christian Servin and Ms. Nadia Karichev, he began his expedition into research, which would eventually lay the groundwork for breakthrough contributions in cybersecurity. During the growth of his academic career, Rodiles, who, after moving on to UTEP, not only garnered accomplishments like winning first place at the GMiS Undergraduate Research Poster competition but also became one of the pioneering UTEP students to be honored as Barry Goldwater Scholars in Spring 2023.

Rodiles later expanded his research into interdisciplinary fields, like applying Bayesian data science techniques in chemistry. His success as an undergraduate led him to internships and research opportunities, notably at Capital One Financial Corporation and through academic programs like CAHSI and Google's Institutional Research Program, according to EPCC News. While working towards his master’s, he led teams to national competition victories and contributed to academic conferences.

Rodiles's advanced work earned him a graduate certificate in Cybersecurity upon completing his master's at UTEP. Celebrated for his leadership, he was named graduate student marshal and inducted into the Phi Kappa Phi honor society. In a surprising twist of admiration, Dr. Christian Servin praised Brian’s journey as a testament to the strength of the academic pathway between EPCC and UTEP. Following his recent graduation, Rodiles is scheduled to present his research at the IEEE ICMLCN 2025 conference in Barcelona, Spain, and will later join Capital One as a cybersecurity professional, as reported by EPCC News.
