Early this morning, the Los Angeles Fire Department tackled a significant blaze in a vacant commercial building in Panorama City. At approximately 3:49 A.M., firefighters responded to reports of a structure fire at 7801 N Van Nuys Blvd, according to an LAFD alert. Upon arrival, crews found the one-story building, formerly known for housing a Smart and Final store, with flames showing through the roof. The team entered a defensive mode to combat the fire, requesting additional resources as the situation escalated.
Making progress through the early hours, firefighters defended adjacent structures from the risk of ember cast as the flames were primarily concentrated at the roof level of the 200' x 300' building, as per the latest LAFD update. With the structure in the demolition stage, the fire represented a unique challenge, averting injury as the fire brigade fought the conflagration. Adjacent buildings emerged unscathed in the large operation, requiring significant coordination amongst firefighters.
Subsequently, an update from the LAFD detailed the firefighters' progress, stating, "Firefighters are making progress and defending adjacent buildings from the ember cast." The fire's most significant presence was reportedly at the roof level, with no injuries cited at the time of the report. Firefighting teams from multiple stations, including specialized units, were deployed to manage the incident.
Within just 42 minutes, the fire was brought under control, or "knockdown," as described by the LAFD. A total of 88 firefighters were involved in extinguishing the blaze at the former Smart and Final location. The LAFD alert stated, "KNOCKDOWN: 88 firefighters extinguished the fire in 42 minutes with no injuries reported." Following the knockdown, crews began the overhaul stage using hand lines to address any remaining hot spots. Morning commuters were advised to avoid the affected area to steer clear of the active scene, which still housed numerous apparatus and water supply lines that lined the streets.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation, and further updates are expected as the LAFD concludes its on-site operations.
