Zachary Barnett, a former music teacher at Eanes Independent School District in Travis County, is facing a slew of legal challenges after a grand jury issued 17 indictments against him, split among several disturbing allegations of child exploitation and pornography, as reported by KXAN on Tuesday.
Barnett, 26, has been indicted on one count of Sexual Performance by a Child, six counts of Possession of Child Pornography, and ten counts of Possession of Lewd Visual Material Depicting a Child, in a case that has shaken the community and raised significant concerns about child safety, in the words of Travis County District Attorney José Garza, "a panel of independent Travis County community members reviewed the evidence and law, determining that Mr. Barnett's actions were unlawful. We look forward to pursuing justice for the families and communities impacted by these crimes," he said, as per a statement obtained by CBS Austin.
The charges stem from an alarming discovery of over 8,000 inappropriate depictions of female students found on Barnett's personal digital devices, which he allegedly zoomed into areas under their skirts and other sensitive regions, a deeply troubling violation as these students were unaware of being filmed, this information comes from an affidavit filed back in February by the Texas Department of Public Safety and detailed by KXAN.
Barnett, who was employed at Eanes ISD's Cedar Creek Elementary School since 2022, resigned this past February before his arrest; he passed all necessary background checks upon employment and had shown no prior indications of criminal behavior, according to Eanes ISD Superintendent Dr. Jeff Arnett and corroborated by KXAN, "This is someone who very discreetly used personal technology to capture images of students who were clothed during the school day, but then used those images and the videos to objectify the students, as well as additional activity that was occurring in the persons life outside of school," Dr. Arnett explained subsequently highlighting a disturbing breach of trust between educators and students.
As the legal proceedings continue to unfold, the community awaits with an anxious hope for justice and healing for the affected families, the scope of Barnett's alleged actions serving as a stark reminder of the vigilance needed to protect the innocent within familiar walls of learning and growth.
