Gas prices in Georgia have risen slightly, with the average cost of regular unleaded gasoline now at $2.95 per gallon, according to GasBuddy. This marks a modest increase from last month. Nationally, prices have risen more sharply—up 9.7 cents in the past week—with the average now at $3.18 per gallon.
Savannah reports the highest gas prices in Georgia at $3.03, followed by Brunswick and Athens. The lowest prices are found in Augusta-Aiken, Rome, and the Catoosa-Dade-Walker area, according to FOX 5 Atlanta.
Nearby areas like Chattanooga are also seeing increases. Experts point to geopolitical issues affecting oil supply as a key reason. Jim Garrity, AAA Director of Public Affairs, told YourErie.com that tensions near the Strait of Hormuz—which handles about 20% of global oil supply—are being closely watched due to their potential impact on oil prices.
Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, noted that recent conflict between Israel and Iran has driven oil prices higher, leading to gasoline price increases not seen since last summer.
Despite the rising costs, AAA expects strong travel numbers during the upcoming Fourth of July holiday.
