Yesterday, Governor Jared Polis enacted a legislative move that aims to fortify public safety by signing a bill into law following the approval of Proposition 130. This new law, dedicated to the enhancement of law enforcement training, also focuses on the key aspects of recruitment and retention of officers.
Sen. Jeff Bridges of Arapahoe County highlighted the rigorous statewide commitment to public institutions. "Colorado voters made it clear with Proposition 130 they want real investments in public safety," he said, having been made worse by federal chaos, yet still, "This bill delivers on that promise by responsibly investing in law enforcement recruitment, retention, and training over the next several years," as obtained by Colorado Senate Democrats.
The bill, SB25-310, equally backed by bipartisan efforts from Senator Barbara Kirkmeyer, R-Weld County, and Representative Rick Taggart, R-Grand Junction, outlines the allocation of $350 million to local law enforcement agencies. According to the Colorado Senate Dems newsroom, this injection of funds is designed to recruit, retain, and train local officers effectively and is bolstered by a one-time $500 million investment from the general fund reserve into PERA. The anticipated interest from this investment is set to reduce future general fund payments to PERA, with the savings funneled into the Peace Officer Training and Support Fund annually.
Rep. Shannon Bird, D-Westminster, highlighted the law's intention to provide comprehensive support for law enforcement and their families. "Our law ensures that the state is a partner in protecting the safety of every Coloradan and makes certain that local law enforcement agencies have the resources they need to do their jobs well," said Bird, as per Colorado Senate Democrats. Proposition 130 also entails the establishment of a Death Benefit Fund - the death benefit of $1 million will be granted to surviving family members or designees of first responders who succumb to injuries or diseases sustained in the line of duty, Bird told the Colorado Senate Democrats.
