Governor Greg Abbott has taken to the press to celebrate a slew of conservative-oriented legislation passed during Texas' 89th Legislative Session. Abbott, in a clear nod to his campaign pledges, declared the session a triumph for policies that, in his view, will set Texas on a path of long-term prosperity and security. "Working with Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick, Speaker Dustin Burrows, and leaders in the Texas Legislature, we delivered historic conservative legislation that will benefit Texans for generations to come," Abbott said in a press release from the Office of the Texas Governor. He further stated his intent to sign these bills into law, with the aim of fortifying Texas' status as a strong, safe, and thriving state.
The governor's office broke down the session's achievements into distinct categories, with education leading as a primary focus. The administration boasts of launching the nation's largest day-one school choice program, adding to this an $8.5 billion funding boost for public schools. In what is likely to stir up debate, they've also outlawed Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) practices from public schools and universities and barred the acknowledgement of any gender beyond male and female. Abbott's administration clearly aims to quickly and decisively reshape the educational landscape in Texas. On the public safety front, over $3 billion was allocated to border security measures, and policies were introduced to make it more difficult for violent offenders to receive bail, evidently spreading the claim to be cracking down on crime across the state.
In terms of infrastructure and economic measures, the promises kept by Governor Abbott's office include a substantial $20 billion investment in water infrastructure, alongside establishing the Texas Advanced Nuclear Energy Office to position the state as a leader in nuclear energy. As the economy remains a major concern for voters, the legislation includes $10 billion earmarked for property tax relief and various tax reductions aimed at creating a more favorable environment for Texas homeowners and businesses.
