
Governor Greg Abbott has signed more than 600 bills from the 89th Regular Legislative Session. “Today, I signed critical legislation passed in the 89th Regular Legislative Session that protects the safety of Texans and safeguards the individual freedoms that our great state was founded on,” Abbott said, according to the Office of the Texas Governor. The governor is still reviewing more than 1,200 additional bills.
Governor Abbott signed 334 bills into law, including House Bill 18 to improve rural health care access, House Bill 27 to add a financial literacy course in high schools, and House Bill 35 to support mental health services for first responders. House Bill 40 expands the jurisdiction of the Texas business court. Senate Bill 10 requires public schools to display the Ten Commandments in classrooms, and Senate Bill 11 allows voluntary prayer and reading of religious texts in schools, as reported by the Office of the Texas Governor.
Texas passed several new laws related to security, land ownership, and public safety. Senate Bill 17 blocks foreign adversaries from buying land in Texas. Senate Bill 36 aims to improve homeland security operations. Senate Bill 75 sets up a Grid Security Commission to protect the state’s power grid. Senate Bill 667 prevents investment of state retirement funds in certain Chinese-related businesses. Senate Bill 835, called Trey’s Law, makes nondisclosure agreements about sexual abuse unenforceable. Senate Bill 1300 increases penalties for organized retail theft, as stated by the Office of the Texas Governor.
