June marks Dairy Month and in celebration, Governor Kathy Hochul has announced a substantial investment into the state's leading agricultural sector, allocating nearly $21.6 million into over 100 New York farms as part of the Dairy Modernization Grant Program. This funding initiative, which aims to support and modernize the dairy industry, will provide for the acquisition and installation of new equipment, expanded storage capacity, and enhanced operations with a notable focus on countering extreme weather's disruption of supply chains, according to the Governor's office.
The grant recipients were recognized at an event at Glory Days Farm in Lowville, where the Beyer family, owners of the farm, expressed their gratitude and optimism for the future, “Our aspiration is for our farm and farms like ours to remain viable for future generations," the Beyers told the Governor's office, esteeming the grant as an opportunity to innovate and uphold their standing within their communities. The awards spanned various regions, with nearly $1.8 million funneled towards nine farms in the Capital Region, and more than $3.9 million allocated to 18 farms in Central New York, while the Finger Lakes saw 20 farms receiving over $4.3 million, showcasing the program's far-reaching support across the state.
Excitement for the grant extends beyond the direct beneficiaries, with State Senator Michelle Hinchey and Farm and Food Growth Fund President and CEO Todd Erling acknowledging the significance of this investment for current operations and future generations, “Thanks to our hard working farm families, and with the support of Governor Hochul, New York continues to be a leader in our regional food system,” Erling highlighted the program's impact and support for the agricultural backbone of their communities, as stated in the press release. Expansion and modernization, as envisioned through this grant, signify the state's commitment to dairy farms' environmental sustainability, climate resilience, and technological advancement, all tantamount to the ongoing success of New York's dairy producers and processors.
With agriculture contributing nearly half of the state's total agricultural receipts, Governor Hochul's administration illuminates its dedication not only through the Dairy Modernization Grant Program but with additional funds directed towards the agricultural industry in the FY26 budget, increasing efforts in climate-resilient farming and the adoption of sustainable practices. This multi-faceted approach to supporting the dairy industry highlights New York's position as the country's fifth largest dairy producer, sustaining its long-standing legacy in the dairy sector.
