Recent developments on Hawai'i Island highlight a pressing issue for the state's endangered species, specifically the 'io, or Hawaiian hawk. According to a news release from the Department of Land and Natural Resources, a local resident discovered an 'io in a severe state of emaciation, suffering from an injury to its beak likely caused by a human. The bird's condition was so dire it had to be euthanized by the Hawai‘i Wildlife Center.
The distressing finding came to light shortly after Hawai‘i Wildlife Center was tipped off about a Craigslist ad showing a hawk up for grabs, which eerily might have been the same bird, considering the similarities in appearance. The ad has since been removed, leaving officials to piece together the circumstances. As Raymond McGuire, a DOFAW wildlife biologist, told the Department of Land and Natural Resources, "I just want to make people aware that these types of abuses are happening in our backyards and if community members see something, please say something."
In the face of rising reports of Hawaiian hawks being shot and maltreated, the Department of Land and Natural Resources is urging the public to remain vigilant. Such acts against the 'io are not only cruel but also illegal under state law. The Hawai‘i Revised Statutes explicitly prohibit the harassment, harm, or killing of endangered species, which includes the Hawaiian hawk.
McGuire further explains the importance of public involvement in curtailing these abuses. "We’ve received several reports in recent years of shootings and other harmful misconduct aimed at Hawaiian hawks. We can all contribute to the protection of our native ʻio and stop the trend of abuse if we keep our eyes open and speak up." In an ongoing effort to combat wildlife abuse, Hawai'i residents are encouraged to report any suspicious activity to the Department of Land and Natural Resources enforcement hotline at 808-643-3567 or via the DLNRTip app, while the Hawai‘i Wildlife Center stands by to assist with raptor rescue and rehabilitation at 808-884-5000.
