The National Weather Service in Memphis has issued a heat advisory for residents across East Arkansas, North Mississippi, Southeast Missouri, and West Tennessee, as temperatures are expected to soar immediately. With the mercury set to hit highs circling 96 degrees and the heat index values teetering up to 107, the advisory remains in place until 9 PM CDT Friday.
As the sun reigns supreme, locals are warned that the high humidity mixed with the vigorous heat could trigger heat illnesses if proper precautions aren't heeded. The NWS advises staying in air-conditioned rooms, minimising time spent under the sun, and maintaining hydration by drinking plenty of fluids. This guidance has a particularly stern warning about checking on those most vulnerable, such as relatives and elderly neighbors.
Strenuous outdoor activities should be relegated, if possible, to the early morning or evening hours when the blaze of the sun ebbs. The community is reminded to wear airy, lightweight clothing to help fend off the oppressive heat. As stated by the National Weather Service, "Take extra precautions when outside. Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing. Try to limit strenuous activities to early morning or evening."
The coming days will see only a slight reprieve with evenings cooling down to around 75 degrees, and there is a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms, which may offer a temporary respite from the sweltering heat. Temperatures are expected to hover consistently near the mid-90s throughout the week.
