A daring rescue operation unfolded on Sunday at Doran Park, where a group of juveniles found themselves in peril on the Pacific's waters. According to a social media post from the Sonoma Sheriff, the Sonoma County Sheriff's Helicopter Henry-1, Sonoma County Fire District's Fire Boat Integrity, and the U.S. Coast Guard from Station Bodega Bay carried out a swift ocean rescue.
The ordeal began when four youths, out on paddle boards, were swept away from the beach, unable to navigate back due to high winds and choppy water. Henry-1, already airborne for a routine patrol over Myers Grade, responded with a rapid arrival on the scene in just 6 minutes. Reports suggested the teenagers were struggling in the high seas, but they managed to reach the safety of the jetty's rocks, where they found themselves trapped.
Despite a U.S. Coast Guard motor lifeboat being on-site, the rocky terrain hindered their ability to retrieve the stranded party. It set the stage for an aerial rescue that showcased human ingenuity and courage under pressure. Henry-1 lowered a Tactical Flight Officer using a 100-ft longline according to the Sheriff's account, who confirmed that the group was uninjured, ensuring that no other persons were left adrift in the cruel grips of the ocean waves. Two youths were subsequently secured into a "Hot Seat" rescue device and safely flown to the beach.
The other half of the group, still marooned, witnessed their salvation in the form of the Fire Boat Integrity's rescue swimmer, cutting through the turmoil to reach them. All juveniles were successfully rescued. The Sonoma Sheriff highlighted that this was only one among several water rescues carried out by Henry-1 over the weekend.
