The crack of the bat and the roar of the crowd at Hickory Crawdads games this summer will be the prelude to something that might outshine the baseball itself: a series of fireworks shows set to light up the night sky. The team has announced nine dates, including today, June 20, July 4, July 18, July 25, August 8, August 22, August 23, and September 5, when fans can enjoy a pyrotechnic display after enjoying America's pastime, according to the City of Hickory's official website.
For those planning to take in the sights, be advised: certain trails and streets will be off-limits starting at 6 p.m. on game nights to ensure the safety of the city's residents – except, of course, for Independence Day when closures will begin at the slightly earlier time of 4 p.m., a time when, no doubt, even Uncle Sam would have a hard time finding an open path to the ballpark. These necessary closures include sections of the Aviation Walk and 24th Street NW, locking them down so that only professional fireworks handlers and Hickory Fire Department personnel can thread their way through the safety zone.
The Hickory Crawdads organization and city officials have collaborated to determine the fireworks launch area to minimize disruptions to local businesses.
For those keen on the spectacular displays, the city asks for your patience and understanding regarding the "necessary trail and street closures on these nights." Fireworks and baseball are a time-honored duo, capturing the spirit of the summer, if one planned appropriately, these slight inconveniences can lead to an evening of grand entertainment.
