Starting July 1, the fee for vehicle safety inspections in Hawai‘i will increase by 75 cents. The new cost will be $25.75 for most cars and trucks, and $17.75 for motorcycles and trailers, the Hawai‘i Department of Transportation announced. This is the first fee increase since 2017.

The updated fees will help cover higher vendor costs for the state's Periodic Motor Vehicle Inspection program. According to the Hawai‘i Department of Transportation, the fee portion for the contractor, Parsons Corporation, will increase from $1.34 to $2.09. Hawai‘i Department of Transportation will keep its share at $1.70 per inspection for "administrative and enforcement purposes." About 500 permitted stations across the state perform the safety inspections and keep the remaining fee for their services.

The fee to replace a lost or destroyed inspection sticker or certificate in Hawaii will increase by 75 cents to $7.09, with the contractor’s share rising to $2.09. More than one million safety checks are done each year to identify potential vehicle problems. A list of safety inspection stations is available on the Hawai‘i Department of Transportation website. A public hearing on the fee changes was held last December. The final rules are now posted online. For more information, the Motor Vehicle Safety Office can be reached at 808-692-7650.
