It's the end of an era along the San Diego waterfront as Joe's Crab Shack prepares to throw in the towel after over twenty years of operation. The East Harbor Drive spot, just a stone's throw from The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park, will officially close its doors between August 24 and 28 of this year. This closure will leave all of its 61 employees looking for work, as confirmed by a formal notice filed with the state earlier this week, according to CBS8.

For many loyal customers like John Yungclas, Joe's Crab Shack has been more than just a place to get their seafood fix quickly. "It’s been there forever. It’s iconic," Yungclas said in an interview with CBS8. The closure is set to surely disappoint scores of patrons, including those visiting from afar, who have made Joe's a highlight of their San Diego experience. "We love it, especially the crab legs," Michael Maciekowich, a frequent visitor, told CBS8. The restaurant has long been a fixture on the city's dining scene, from family traditions to tourist must-dos.

However, the Port of San Diego points to years of declining revenue as the catalyst for the decision to shut down the restaurant. According to The San Diego Union-Tribune, port commissioners started looking for new operators as early as 2022 and had eight proposals to consider by the next fall. Lease payments have dipped sharply, from $135,000 before the pandemic to just $118,000 in 2024.

With Joe’s getting ready to make their final exits, The Rustic, a Texas-based restaurant concept, is poised to take the stage. "All of our food is coming off of a wood-fired grill. Think almost kind of a wonderful campfire-type atmosphere where we’re grilling steaks, grilling fish, grilling burgers, cold margaritas, great bottles of wine," Kyle Noonan, co-founder of The Rustic's parent company, Free Range Concepts, described in a statement obtained by CBS8. The Rustic aims to embed itself within the local community, focusing on area suppliers and talent. With active and confidential lease negotiations underway, as the San Diego Union-Tribune reports, The Rustic’s introduction to the San Diego waterfront still awaits an official lease agreement and adaptations to the space that honor its historical significance.
