An investigation has been launched following the death of a man who was in the custody of Baltimore police, officials announced this week. Maryland State Investigators from the Independent Investigations Division of the Maryland Office of the Attorney General are probing the sequence of events that led to the man's demise on Tuesday.
The incident began when the man approached a Baltimore Police Department patrol car at a red light on the corner of West Franklin Street and North Franklintown Road around 9:40 p.m., as detailed in a press statement issued yesterday and reported by FOX Baltimore. Authorities noted that the man, who appeared to be undergoing a mental health crisis, had repeatedly walked into the road while speaking to the officer in the vehicle. The officers attempted to detain the man for his safety, but despite their efforts, he became unresponsive before emergency medical services arrived.
By 10:30 p.m., with medics still not on scene, officers took the individual to a local hospital in a police cruiser. The man was pronounced dead early Wednesday, at 3 a.m., according to information from a WMAR2 News report.
The officers involved were equipped with body-worn cameras that captured the incident, and the footage will be released by BPD and IID policies, the Independent Investigations Division stated.
Meanwhile, the Independent Investigations Division is urging anyone who may have further information, including cell phone or private surveillance video evidence, to contact them at (410) 576–7070 or by email at [email protected].
