In a straightforward account of disturbing events, Irvine Police took 25-year-old Gavin Christian Mestas into custody after receiving reports of lewd behavior at an apartment community gym. The Irvine man faces multiple charges following his arrest on Tuesday, which stemmed from incidents involving public indecency and the harassment of minors.
Authorities were tipped off to the situation on June 8, when Irvine Police were called to the location on Murica Aisle after Mestas was caught on a security camera at approximately 4:32 PM. He was allegedly seen engaging in sexual acts while recording women at the pool area. According to the press release by the City of Irvine, the suspect was not a resident of the complex and had purportedly gained access to the facility by manipulating the lock with a tool.
The case escalated when it emerged that Mestas was suspected of committing similar acts earlier that day, and previously on June 2. The facts turned graver with the revelation that on one occasion, two minors were filmed by the accused while he performed the sexual act. After identification through surveillance footage, Irvine detectives executed a search warrant at Mestas's residence, uncovering evidence that connected him to these heinous acts.
Mestas was taken into custody and charged with several offenses, including lewd acts in a public place and burglary. More serious charges include child annoyance and recording a minor for sexual gratification, suggesting a deep violation of privacy and safety within the community. He was booked at the Orange County Jail following the arrest. The Irvine Police Department is appealing to the public for further information and asks anyone with details relevant to the case to contact Detective Vasquez at 949-724-7223.
