This weekend, Jacksonville is hosting a major event aimed at reducing the number of animals in need of a home. The City of Jacksonville's Animal Care & Protective Services team is teaming up with 11 other shelters from Northeast Florida for the Petco Love Mega Adoption Event. Slated to take place at the Jacksonville Fairgrounds tomorrow, and on Sunday, the initiative seeks to provide hundreds of dogs and cats with new homes from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM on both days.
The adoption extravaganza is part of the Florida Leaders in Lifesaving program, with collaboration from The Jacksonville Humane Society and Petco Love. Together, they hope to quickly find loving homes for 2,000 shelter pets over the event's duration. In a statement obtained by City of Jacksonville, FL - Government's social media page, attendees can expect to see "approximately 80 dogs and 40 cats each day," with staff and volunteers available to help make the perfect match and answer any queries potential pet owners might have.
All animals at the event will be spayed or neutered, microchipped, and up to date on vaccines. In an effort to encourage adoptions, the usual fees will be waived, though Duval County residents will be required to pay a $20 city license fee. This move to ease the adoption process is significant, given that often, the cost and complexity of adopting can deter individuals from taking on a pet.
Those interested in expanding their family with a furry friend have a prime opportunity to do so while also helping to alleviate the pressure on local shelters that are frequently over capacity. The Mega Adoption Event is not only set to find homes for animals in need but also to potentially reduce the number of future strays and improve overall animal welfare in the region.
